Just wondering: if I were to tell my cancer-strickened relative about the mantra, will it be wrong of me to reveal tantric mantras, since it is already found in the Sutra... I guess i should be telling her to take refuge in Grandmaster first, then chant the mantra (but I dunno whether she will then need empowerment for that mantra)? :o
This brings to question: how liberal are we about revealing mantras to non-TBS students? General ones like the six-syllable mantra is ok, i presume, but more specific ones -- i am not sure

It is ok for anyone to chant mantras, especially if the mantra is already revealed in a Sutra. The person doesn't even need to be a follower of Buddhism.
Of course, it would be great if your relative took refuge in TBS for blessing and lineage empowerment reasons. Practicing the Four Preliminary Practices, and doing Vajrasattva Yoga plus chanting 100-syllable mantra will help your relative a lot.

you can always teach your relative to recite the Maha-chakra-vajra Dharani [Da lun jin gang tuo luo ni] 21 times and followed by Guru Mantra 108 times. Both of them are also found in the same book.

As from what I know about TBS, it is the same as most Tantric shools. meaning most mantras you need the empowerment from the Root Guru or a master of TBS who has already recieved that mantra.
Alot of the mantras by GM in his latest books have not been transmitted b4.
But we normally suggest people to chant GM"S heart mantra
if you chant any of the other mantras with out having taking refuge or had the correct empowerment. Then you will not recieve the lineage blessing from that mantra, tantra places heavy importance on the issue of recieving mantra empowerments or blessing for certain practices.
IF you chant the mantras in that way just by finding them in GM"S book the most you will do is create an affinity with the mantra,
GM"s mantra or guan yin's mantra is the mantra we normally tell those to chant if they havent taken refuge. I hope this helps. O r your relative could recite the High king guan yin sutra or True Buddha sutra for 1,000 times. if they recite gm's mantra it should be at least 1 million times
