Hello Everyone,
I just joined this Padmakumara forum tonight. I must say, it's very interesting. You can learn much from other drama followers. Just like to say, hi Jackie, I like all your posts and your stories.
Back on track. I was just wondering what you people visualize when you meditate. Some days, I know what I'm visualizing about. The next, it's gone. I am interested on the visualizations you people have when you meditate. Please keep my informed.
Thanks you very much.
:) Ah mi to fo :)
Buddhafly02/20/02 at 11:47:20#2Re: MeditationHello Jadie.
Welcome!
Personally when I meditate I visualize Grand Master Lu shining light on me and my family.
It really depends on the practice.
When I do Vajra Protection I use one specific Vajra instead of four.
How about you?

jadie02/20/02 at 22:39:21#3Re: MeditationThanks for your reply. Anyhow, well my question was really for the part for the practise, say for Guru Yoga....after the visualization of Grand Master. When, it recommends to do the 9 round breathing and stuff. Sometimes, it's difficult for me to do.......so I was wondering if there were any other suggestions. I remember when I went to San Fransico for the summer camp there. During that section, they recited "Om mani padme hum" I think around 10 times. So I was wondering if there were any other suggestions. And like I said, Thanks again ;)
celestialmaiden02/21/02 at 14:56:49#4Re: MeditationHello Jadie! Welcome :D
(I had lots of fun this weekend) Thanks for reading my posts! As for visualizations, mine are so mixed up. That's why I need help. Sometimes I visualize Grandmaster turn into Kuan Yin to symbolize the transition from Guru Yoga to Personal Deity Yoga. Then when I am really deep into the meditation I will go straight to the nine round breathing exercise. After that visualization, I just concentrate on breathing. Sometimes when you count to a hundred breaths you can enter Samadhi. Then after all this I recite 49 Guru's heart mantra and 108 6-syllable mantra. So instead of two different visualizations with the mantra reciting in the middle I combine the two and do the mantra at the end. This is because sometimes I am in Samadhi from the first visualization and I do not want to move.
Maha7002/22/02 at 11:58:19#5Re: MeditationI can't do the 9 round exercise. I get a headache. I just count six breaths in and out. Visualize white light coming in the nostrils going through the body and purifying all negative karma. Then I visualize breathing out black smoke. The black smoke represents all negative karma.
Sometimes if I have a cold (like now) I visualize the white light going in and around the nasal area and purifying it (in order to stop my running nose). If you have problems with specific organs in the body, like leg or kidney, you can visualize white light going to that part and purifying it. Then breath out the negative karma.
Maha
jadie02/23/02 at 21:34:06#6Re: MeditationI really appreciate explaining their methods of visualization. Like now, I just finished cultivating. During the part to "Enter Samadhi," this is what I usually do. I usually practise the repentance yoga. So, at first, I visualize Grandmaster coming out, and shining withe light and purifying my body. Next, he enters my body and we become one. Everywhere around us is also white light, and we become one with the white light.

Hello Jadie.
When you visualize Grand Master it should be both of you becoming "oneness".
This is okay!
Lyciss04/26/02 at 19:40:23#8Re: MeditationHey everyone,
I like to take additional steps since i also try to improve my concentration, besides Grand Master appearing but to also have the 8 principle deities appear behind him who are also radiating multi-colored lights to purify and empower me and then we all merge... i know this seems to be a lot to visualize but like anything else, practice will bring about results...
the reason for this came from when i read Grand Master giving a teaching of the Dragon Wealth Vase practice... in the talk he said the Dragon King was requesting Grand Master to teach this practice because he was bored... lol and Yellow Jambhala was too busy with so many requests... i know the buddhas dont get bored but it made me think to include them as a way of keeping them fresh in my mind...
it made me think to include not only GM but also the 8 principle deities and in the future ill expand this to many more perhaps even include the Dharma protectors... and hopefully this will build up a great affinity with many buddhas and also help my concentration...
om mani padme hum
celestialmaiden04/26/02 at 20:21:05#9Re: MeditationLyciss,
That is a good idea to visualize the eight principle deities. Indeed, it would take a lot of practice but it would create affinity with all of them. Then do you chant 108x for each of the deitie's mantra? That would definitely take very long!
I remember in GM's book, True Buddha Tantric Dharma, he mentioned that when one pays homage and does prostation one only needs to visualize a sky full of brilliant stars, and each star represents a Buddha and perform the homage. Perhaps, that method is simplified for those of us who have trouble visualizing just 1 deity! haha ;D
Lyciss04/26/02 at 20:31:00#10Re: MeditationCele,
actually i did modify my four preliminary practices and added in 108 recitations of each of the 8 principle deities... it does take a bit longer but i have the time so i do it... this is not expected by anyone else its a personal choice, so please dont feel like you should have to follow suit... and i hope it doesnt sound like bregging i just thought that maybe this thought might inspire someone else... i really do believe that there is no difference between simply visualizing Grand Master and not the others... its like Grand Masters two heart mantras, one is long and the other is short, but its said they both are equal... its ones own preference...
om mani padme hum
Buddhafly04/26/02 at 22:18:23#11Re: MeditationCelestialmaiden.
That is such a good book!
I have forgot many of the things in there, I will have to re-read it.
celestialmaiden04/26/02 at 22:23:19#12Re: MeditationLyciss,
No, no..of course I do not think you are bragging. We are all here to help each other, I understand that. But yes, I do agree with you that is a personal choice and there is no difference. Even my own practice has some slight variations.
Om Mani Padme Hom
Lyciss04/27/02 at 07:19:59#13Re: MeditationHey everyone,
since we are talking about practice i thought id also mention something i find interesting...
i find it more difficult to recite the Medicine Buddhas heart mantra 108 times than Vajrasattva's Hundred Syllable Mantra twenty one times...
actually when i count the syllables to the Vajrasattva Hundred Syllable Mantra i come up with 110... so multiply that by 21 times and you get 2310 syllables... ok and the Medicine Buddhas heart mantra has 27 syllables multiplied by 108 which is 2916 syllables and a difference of 606 syllables which would be like reciting the Vajrasattva Hundred Syllable Mantra about 6 more times and my thoughts say id rather do that then struggle with the Medicine Buddhas Heart mantra but i know i should stick with it anyways... when things are difficult we shouldnt abandon them because they are hard but instead stick to them and the results will turn out good in the end...
all of the other principle deity heart mantras i have no problem with... i wonder if it means my affinity with the Medicine Buddha is less than the others or its just a complicated mantra for me...
i have the Medicine Buddha sutra that i read over from time to time so im not quite sure what it means... its no big deal and im sure ill get past it in time... just thought id share...

jessie_seow04/29/02 at 06:53:10#14Re: Meditationi read somewhere (sorry for my really poor memory): when one visualises Grandmaster, He should be wearing the Five-Buddha Crown. So that when you prostrate, you should visualise you are prostrating to Grandmaster and also the Buddhas of the ten directions
Lyciss04/29/02 at 07:21:04#15Re: MeditationJessie,
you are right... and it was Grand Master talking about prostrations and showing devotion to one's root guru... He says he wears the Five Buddha Crown so he wont get an ego if his students start prostrating to him... he says he remembers to think hes wearing the Five Buddha Crown and that they are prostrating to the Buddhas on his head instead of to him... lol Grand Master is amazing with his ability to disperse incomming karma and knows how to ward off self pride... he is worthy of our prostrations but to him we are just as worthy... it seems the closer you get towards enlightenment (if there is such a thing as closer to) the more often you are tested by the poisions of attachment... if you are destined to become a buddha you will always keep in mind what these poisions are and how to cure them before they poison you... i hope this doesnt sound like i have it all down to a science... because i dont, i even fail at times to keep them in mind and find myself feeling their effects... but when you know you are "sick" from them you can find the antidote... if you arnt aware that you are "sick" thats even worse...
i hope everyone has the right antidote always on hand

jessie_seow04/29/02 at 17:51:11#16Re: Meditationone question that bugs me:
everytime we start a cultivation session, we have to visualise that
1) on our right, there are seven generations of fathers,
2) on our left, seven generations of mothers
3) at our back, there are our relatives and frens
4) in front of us, there are all the debt-collecting spirits
For instance, if we are practising the Vajrasattva Heart Yoga, do we stop visualising this after the deliverence mantra (cos i would visualise them as taking up a lotus and flying to Buddhaland); or after the repentence mantra (where Buddhas shine great light on them); or after the whole session???
jessie_seow04/30/02 at 04:50:28#17Re: Meditationor maybe it taken for granted that your debt-collecting spirits are always there?
Lyciss05/01/02 at 20:55:57#18Re: MeditationJessie,
some things are vaguely discribed by Grand Master for many reasons... some practices have very defined points to them that must be correct for the practice to be effective... others there is room for personal additions which only depends on your own intentions...
if you want to invite your karmic debtors to your practices so they can recieve blessings or any merits by doing so then thats totally up to you... also many people arnt even aware of how deep their karmic debt goes so how can they visualize those things you mentioned? if you cant visualize it clearly then it wont be very effective...
the biggest thing i see when talking about visualizing family and friends joining you in your practice is another way of helping you to do cultivation 24 hours a day... cultivation shouldnt just be for a couple hours of reciting mantras or meditation... one becomes a buddha when you can constantly no matter what you are doing be reciting or upholding cause and effect accordingly to minimize the amount of negative karma you produce... and properly handle any negative karma that has come to its fruitation...
i know not everyone can practice this much but if you cant then you can try to take little steps to get to this point... im not saying that im capible of practicing like this but i make effort to improve myself so i dont restrict the dharma at any moment...
om mani padme hum
jessie_seow05/01/02 at 22:39:36#19Re: Meditationi see...
the reason i ask is that whenever i go to the Chapter, the cultivation invariably will involve the visualisation of parents, frens, and karmic debtors...
I understand that in group cultivation, this is most suitable because the results would be great. Esp. so after protective boundary has been established by the reverend-teacher.
I guess if i practise at home, it may not be advisable if i dun have such protective boundary, or if my visualisation of such boundary is not powerful enuff....So normally, before i do any visualisation, i would sprinkle Great Compassion water around my house as a boundary protection before i visualise..
The visualisation is supposed to help one cultivate the Boddhi heart esp. towards your enemies whom you visualise in front of you. Sometimes, i am unable to do so because of lingering dislike -- so i am worried that such visualisation would be catatrophic if visualised wrongly, and "sth else" may appear..
sorry for my rambling.
I guess i should just concentrate on parents and frens first....that should be easy enuff for a start. As for cultivation 24 hours a day with those around me, i will try my best! :)

Are you sure that our karmic enemies are to be visualized in front of us?
I have always visualized them behind everyone else.
