just had a quarrel with my mother last night. over something which is mundanely insignificant -- washing plates.

was branded unfilial because i wanted to continue watching tv and she demanded that i washed the plates first.

in the end i gave the excuse that I just came home from work and wanted to bathe first........in the end, my father washed the plates instead.

can't do my cultivation last night because i was still fuming over being branded as unfilial. sigh! i wished i had the mind to control my feelings and not let it run all over the place.

It's just that my mother came home every night from her part-time work and watch tv till the wee hours at night. The mere suggestion that she watches too much tv will send her into a tirade of "Is this the way to treat your mother, etc..." It was tiring.

Sigh. Sorry for bearing with my tirades. feeling better now....

Just finished reading a english-translated version of "The Sutra of Filial Piety" over the web. I realised that compliance is filial piety. I should have just washed teh stupid plates, and not let any feelings come over me...

Sometimes i had this feeling--if not for my father and mother, i would have gone straight to nunhood...there is really nothing left for me in this world except them and my cultivation.

Jessie.

Living at home can be tough excepting others rules and being asked to help out especially when one doesn't feel like it.

The thing is that we all are impermanent.  It is sad to watch, in our lifetime, our parents start to age and become more and more helpless.

Next it will be our turn.  I know when I am older I would want my daughter to help out.  Now is very important with parents to what will happen to us later with our own children.

The suffering a parent has to go through is so enormous.
From my own experience Jessie enjoy them while you can.
Tomorrow they may not be there.

hey Jessie,
i use to have similar situations happen to me... i wondered why i would rather watch TV then do the dishes... i thought about it, thinking tv gives me pleasure and doing the dishes is boring... then i realized that I was labeling them this way and in reality they are empty of either classification... i decided to try and label washing the dishes as being pleasurable... with a few key thoughts and a little recitation, "doing the dishes brings me pleasure" and it works...

you have power over your thoughts, dont let them rule you...

keke.....is this a case of "mind over matters " ?

or simply

' self-hypnotize '   (self-deceived)

keke......... ;D

Lyciss04/19/02 at 23:48:49#6Re: had a quarrel
is self deception bad, if the result is good? i dont really see it as self deception, to me its more of self modification for prosperity results...
in the dharmapada i remember the buddha saying bad or negative thoughts are like weeds in a garden... we have to pluck them out so that good flowers (thoughts) can thrive...
so if i deprive myself of negative thoughts then only good ones arise... which is what happens...
but i guess in a sense self deception of negative human behavior would be a better way of putting it... lol

Following the Noble Eightfold Path can be compared to cultivating a garden, but in Buddhism one cultivates one's wisdom. The mind is the ground and thoughts are seeds. Deeds are ways one cares for the garden. Our faults are weeds. Pulling them out is like weeding a garden. The harvest is real and lasting happiness.

I think doing dishes and watching television are not inherently good or bad, fun or not fun - the big difference is our attitude towards the activity.  So if we really change our attitude, then we are not lying or deceiving ourselves.  If we only pretend we enjoy doing the dishes, but really don't enjoy it, then we are denying our own experience.
So there are real challenges here.  Any addicting activity (like television) will be more attractive on the surface.  We have to ask ourselves what we really want to do, and when we choose to do what we want to do, we can act with the conviction that we are doing what we want.
Emotion colors everything.  Any activity's own colors are very pale compared to the paint we smear all over it.

hmmmmm......Brenda, i kinda of start to think that you
are very uptight with keeping the Buddhist's precepts to
it's finite details.  ;D

Like using a picture frame to frame the picture within
a certain boundary. Any overstepping will be out.

But isn't that too restrictive ? And too tight ?
Is the essence of precepts to control one's mind/actions/thoughts or to help one to release oneself
from the "ego" state of the Samsara conditions that
we are binding ourselves to ?
