Luljeta03/21/02 at 23:13:33#2Hi Tbsnkid2,
I'm not sure if I'm getting my history (or spelling) right, but Leong Wang was probably a leader during the Tang Dynasty.
There is a story associated with the Leong Wang Dharma Repentance. I'll do my best to reiterate it, but mine is probably a very brief version.
This leader had several wives, and the one he loved most was the most jealous. As a result of her jealousy, she reincarnated into a snake. As a snake, she approached her former husband and spoke to him in his mind, telling him that this is her present incarnation as a result of her past life jealousy.
From what I was told, he gathered as many masters and monks as he could to come up with a repentance ceremony effective enough to help her repent for her past life karmic sins of jealousy, and it was effective. I don't remember the outcome though, whether she reincarnated as a human again.
But from what I was told, Leong Wang Dharma Repentance is supposed to be very effective for repentance.
Hope that helps. If someone else here knows more about the history and origins, hopefully he or she can contribute some info too.
Regards,
Lu

arica03/22/02 at 03:03:31#3Continue with the story , chapter II.
The jealous empress was cleared of all her sins and reborn in the Heaven after the mass repentance ceremony and appeared as a Heavenly being in the dream of
the Liang Wang Emperor to inform him.
As the repentance ceremony was held by the Emporer Liang Wang , it was named after him.

He had an empress whom he loved very much.
One day the empress passed on. Feeling sad and being a buddhist, he did not want her to remain in the lower realms. Thus he invited all the monks to pray for her soul. But he gave a test for all the monks by burying a copy of the Vajra Sutra in the front door. All the monks crossed over it Failing the test. All, but one: Ven Bao Ji. (He knelt on the ground and refused to stand up, saying there was a buddha there.)
So he invited Ven Bao Ji to pray for her soul, which he did. The empress was lifted off to heaven, and then appeared in front of King Liang to verify that she is now in heaven.
Touched, King Liang consolidated the liturgy by which Ven. Bao Ji performed hor his empress and had it spread all over china. It is now the present Liang Wang repentance liturgy.
As to Ven. Bao Ji...he was the manifestation of Avalokiteshrava.
