jessie_seow04/24/02 at 19:13:47#1have been reading Surangama Sutra (chinese: leng-yen jing). Grandmaster mentioned before that the Sutra shows how to fight off Mara... In fact, from what i read, it also shows you how to cultivate to achieve emptiness of the five aggregates.
it is a very difficult sutra to understand and i am hving a hard time understanding...Suggest that maybe one day, Padmakumara.org could come up with summaries of difficult sutras...(maybe it is the easy way out, but i felt that it would benefit those who are not intelligent - like me...)
of course, could have a vetting person such as a reverend or a Master...
My humble opinion...

Lyciss04/25/02 at 01:10:55#3Re: Surangama Sutrai like the Surangama Sutra,
ive read it twice and it is long and parts very fumbly to understand but if you can see into it youll definately attain something new each time you read it...
another difficult sutra is the VIMALAKIRTI NIRDESA SUTRA, its a very playful and magical sutra... it has amazing "special effects" as i call it... but they are discriptions of places and events that are beyond most peoples comprehesion thats why i call them special effects like in the movies... lol
a short background of that sutra is... a Layman... yes i say Layman named Vimalakirti who is enlightend and is supposidly sick in his bed... he telepathicly asked the Buddha to send someone to come and ask about his sickness... the Buddha complies and asks a bunch of different people to go and ask about Vimalakirti's sickness but they all give reasons why they cant or dont want to...
its a funny sutra but it also holds great Dharma lessons! it is also a very long sutra as well...
enjoy

i will probably spend months on it!
there are portions of the sutra that i could hardly understand even in english. i guess i will have to reread
jessie_seow04/25/02 at 03:48:13#5Re: Surangama Sutrahave been thinking...
Already, Ananda had to listen to BUdhha for so long to understand the Surangama Sutra that Buddha preached.
Let alone, us, who live in this present age with so much distraction. Let alone those who are not very intelligent.
Was looking at this ant and i can't help wondering that this ant has committed some bad karma to be re-born as an ant and it probably won't even have the chance to read the Sutra or be a TBS student.
Maybe if i am to be reborn as an ant, it would be sometime (maybe thousand of rebirths) before I would be born a human, and who knows what sort of human i would be...
some mutterings.
