Brenda's comment that the book The True Buddha Tantric Dharma was such a wonderful book spawned me to start this new topic.

I am curious about what your favorite book of Grandmaster is and why? Or if you have any comments about his books.

My personal favorite is Encounters with the World of Spirits. That is the book which encouraged me to practice Buddhism and brought my life into a whole new perspective.

The Inner World of the Lake. When I first read this book, I did not really understand it. His poems seemed so deep and I was not a poem-sort of person. However, after studying Zen Buddhism in class, I reread the book many years later and was able to appreciate the metaphors and the poems. It was definitely a different flavor.

Whispers of Solitude. Although it is short I like that book a lot because I miss GM and it gives me a glimpse of what his life is like in the present.

Cele,
its really hard for me to say which book is my favorite since i havent read them all yet... but i have to agree with the ones that you have listed i have also read and it seems the more i read the more i feel like Grand Master is "spiritually huging me" and whispering "wake up wake up" because from the first moment i read the story about the spirit of the lake my whole world started to make sense and became more balanced... once again i also have to thank all the translators out there i am in their dept as well for making it possible for me to obsorb GM's Dharma! thankx

The True Buddha Tantric Dharma. I read this book very early on and before I even understood the practice. Therefore I found it very confusing, but after I approached it after understanding and practicing the yoga, I appreciated the details which enabled me to improve my practice. It was very technical and detailed.

Revelations from the Buddha King. (forgot the name) This book couldn't have come at a better time. By the time it was translating in English, I had read all of GM's books already and this book revealed all the secrets to his previous book. It is like the book of Revelations!

Lyciss,
That is a cute analogy. "spiritually hugging" and "wake up wake up". hehe  ;D

Living This Moment of Illumination. Book 152. Wow! This book was a real eye-opener. I really appreciate GM being able to talk about these topics in such detail which others perhaps might not be so comfortable talking about. I learned things that weren't openly discussed in Buddhism or to my experience.

A Collection of Treasure Remarks. This book is tough. I really do not understand it. My wisdom has not developed that much. However, the subtitle of this book after all is 'Vajra sayings leading to enlightenment.' Obviously I would have to be enlightened to understand it! But I will read this book at a later time when my wisdom has developed a little bit more.

The Flying Carpet of the East. Mystical Experiences of True Buddha Disciples. I always confuse these books together because they are very similar. All talk about spiritual stories and encounters, which I always love to read.

The Land Spirits of Your House. This was the first book I ever read of GM. My mom bought it for me b/c I was interested in feng-shui. This book is very practical and I learned a lot about Feng-shui from an author whom I only like to read!

hey Cele,
i have to agree, Living This Moment of Illumination is a powerful read in the sense of being too sexually driven can lead to many problems that you arnt even aware of... it also points out that many things we do have such a huge effect on others so we really need to be aware of what we choose to do for a living...
going back to what i mentioned in another tread this is why i felt dishearted about making techno music and wanting to play it for people but i was worried if i helped to promote drug use then all that karma would be placed on my head and i figured i should just not get involved and i was really at a loss since its such a passion for me... but i no longer need to worry about that... 8)

My favorites are The True Buddha Tantric Dharma and
New Revelations from the Buddha King.

I had to think that one over a bit.

I am finding it is god to go back an re-read the old books.  So many things that I forgot are there.

** Must remember to get Akasagarbha Empowerment to improve my memory!

I was talking with Master Lian Zhi a few days ago and was surprised how she can remember Grand Master Lu's earliest teachings with such clarity.

Also if I am ever going to learn Mandarin in this lifetime I am going to need it.
celestialmaiden04/28/02 at 20:12:59#8Re: Which of GM's book is your favorite?
Brenda,
What is the akasagharba empowerment? do you know the chinese name?

Yes, me too, I need to learn mandarin! Feel like I'm missing out on so much information because I cannot read chinese or know mandarin!
jessie_seow04/28/02 at 20:50:10#9Re: Which of GM's book is your favorite?
My favorite are the "art of meditation" and "clouding of..." (sth about meditation).

I think these two books reveal what entering samadhi really means...
Buddhafly04/29/02 at 19:06:30#10Re: Which of GM's book is your favorite?
Celest:

In the High King Avalokitevara Sutra
it says:

XU KONG ZANG PU SA,
Akasagarbha Bodhisattva

Perhaps this could be the Chinese name.......?
celestialmaiden04/29/02 at 19:50:34#11Re: Which of GM's book is your favorite?
Brenda,
I see now. That empowerment improves your memory? That is what I need because I have such a poor short term memory. I always forget what I am going to say next...especially embarassing when I put my hand up in class and suffer a memory failure when the whole class is waiting to hear what I have to say!

Jessie,
I believe I have read those two books a long time ago....so long ago that I forgot. I do remember that 'the record of clouding in my meditation' (I forgot the name as well) had a purple cover and that I enjoyed it. Just now I am starting to read 'the art of meditation' over again. Thanks for mentioning them. That way I can go back and reread them. I will take note and pay attention to his explanation of Samadhi. Thanks!

Actually when I was little I never liked reading books. The only thing I liked to read is Archie comic books. The time when I discovered GM's book, I knew I had found the type of books I like to read. They always told me in school that when one finds the type of books one likes to read, then one will read. Well, I was looking all my life and now I cannot get enough of his books! Reading used to be such a burden but now I find that his books are an easy read in terms of time. I can read a whole book in two or three days comfortably and in one day if I spent all my time doing it. However, I prefer paper books rather than e-books because I suffer from eye strain from my monitor if I spent too much time staring at the screen.

Right now I am depending on the books that spell out "what to do" - True Buddha Tantric Dharma, etc.,
but it is Encounters with the World of Spirits that I read first and brought GM into my heart.

Inner World of the Lake has a flavor that is quite different, refreshing and lubricating to the mind and body (Mimosa will understand!) - Maybe it is my favorite.

For the Art of Meditation, when I read it I itch to get my editor's hands on it!  The English needs polishing!  There is much there to work with.

And I don't know the other meditation book about clouding - has that come and gone?

Dance, I think that I really have tortured you good!
Trust me, next year this time, you can quote GM's writing without lookinig at the books! Because you edit them yourself!
haha

Lian Hua Dance,
You brought to my attention some errors in another book I have found. hm....I cannot recall the name of the book but it had a purple cover and was not too thick. I will find out in a day and post the name of the book, but this book had swears in it. For example, the word "sh*t" was used so many times throughout the book that I stopped reading it because I don't believe it is GM's intent to use such vulgar language. That is one of the more major editing errors.

I am glad that you have brought up that point.
As a proofreader, I was the one assuring the word *sh*t* used in the book.

In the original Chinese, GM actually uses that word.  I hope that you are talking about the same article. It is the article that someone threatened to kill GM right? In GM's book, the bad guy used even worse cursing words to threaten GM,  I have toned down a bit already.

Translator's job is to *faithfully* translate. If GM uses the word "fu*k" I will not cover it up. It shows no respect to the author, also the readers will not get the full picture of the whole scenario.

I was often told in the past that when GM's books were translated, the feelings were changed. GM is very frank and straghtforward person. He doesnt hide his feelings, and he often makes very blunt and surprising remarks. If translators conver up the cursing words or any setences, how can the readers fully understand who GM is! I want to give everyone an equal chance to know GM. The language can be changed from Chinese to English, but the meanings, tones and spirits
should remain intact!

Read the article again.  You will know that your Guru is a frank and straightforward person. You are very lucky to take refuge under someone so special!

Mimosa,
No, that was not the article I was talking about. I found the book, it was "A Plethora of Scenic Splendours." But sorry, I did not know that sometimes it is his intention to use swears. I did not mean to criticize the translators or especially Grandmaster and I do not doubt him or question his honesty.

If you have read any of my postings, you know I respect him with my deepest reverance and hold him very highly in my heart and know how grateful I am to have him as a Guru.
mimosa05/16/02 at 09:21:26#17Re: Which of GM's book is your favorite?
Ah! you didnt reply for  a few days, I thought that my blunt remarks upset you :-)

yes, I know that you have  high respect for GM. I am just making my statement from a translation point of view.

That book, I know... Actually, I dont read any GM's English book that is not translated by Janny. I found so many errors in other translators' books, just annoying...

Now, padma is making a difference!

Yes, I know what you mean. I like reading translations by Janny Chow too. But no, I was not upset. I have just started spring semester so I have not had as much time to visit the forums. Sorry if I caused you to worry or anything.

It is just me. I do get worried. I dont like to upset people. If I do, I want to make sure that I apologize.Of course, sometimes there is an exception. If I am **really**upset, I just dont say anything and dont accept any apology!!! hahah
