"THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AN ACARYA AND HIS DISCIPLE"
His Holiness said, "the relations between an Acarya and the disciples is a reciprocating one. Both sides must have deep mutual bonds. The making of an ideal relationship is based on the following five observations:
First, the physiognomic features of the disciple must be proper and decent. This signifies the karmic merits which he has accumulated in his previous lives.
Second, the disciple must be very diligent. This is important. Not only has he made his initial vows, he must also persevere and work extremely hard in his Dharma cultivation.
Thirdly, the Bodhi vows. This is very important, for ascendancy into the Four Holy Realms requires one to make the Bodhi vows. Having contrary intentions in Dharma-practise, will only divert one into the deviant path. The vows made must be proper and correct, and adhering unto such will enable one to attain Enlightenment.
Fourth, the disciple must have unwavering confidence in the master. This is quite difficult for some people, who take refuge and learn from many other sects and schools . They practise without a definite objective, thus unable to develop adequate and profound understanding of the teachings. They have no firm faith in a master, and hence 'faith' is very important.
Fifth, the disciple's ability to master the Tantra taught by his teacher. Although some people are diligent, they are born with good features, have made their Bodhi vows, and are also very faithful in their master, they still fail to comprehend the Tantra. They cannot shoulder the weight of Vajrayana teachings, and are unable to inherit the genuine lineal Tantric essence.
Consequently, a true Tantric disciple should fulfil the above five conditions.
His Holiness continued, "A Tantric disciple should have a strong faith in the master, able to immerse into his master's teachings, and even understand the more profound doctrines. He should make genuine Bodhi vows to benefit all sentient beings, never idle and always diligent. These conducts will dignify his/her facial appearance. Merits accumulated in one's previous lives and in the present Dharma-cultivation, are embodied in such dignified physical features. The disciple's voice must also be loud and clear. This is to facilitate the preaching of the Dharma, while displaying one's physical well-being."
This concise and penetrative exposition by His Holiness was joyously received by the audience, who were then delighted with Dharma bliss.
