The TB Sutra discusses the importance of developing a quiescent mind. How to do this?

Hi Steven,

The state of "quiescent mind" mentioned in the TB Sutra is a very interesting translation. A more literal translation from the original Chinese text would be "thoughtlessness". It is a state of mind, according to Grand Master, of true samadhi, of total oneness with one's inner self / buddha nature and with the universe, wherein there are no traces of any thoughts, attachments or emotions. It is the highest state in meditation, and once you achieve that state, you are effectively, a Buddha. This is the state of mind expounded in the "Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra", where the six senses and the twelve conditions no longer exist, and salvation / enlightenment is ultimately achieved.

According to GM, in order to enter this state, one must first be able to condition one's mind into the state of "single-mindedness". One must be able to eradicate all rubbish thoughts and focus on one thought and one thought alone. In Buddhism, there are various ways to do this. One can concentrate on the burning tip of an incense, or as in Zen Buddhism, trace the question of "who am I before I was born" or "who is this person that is chanting the name of the Buddha", among others. But Grand Master favours the "counting breathe" method, and also the various visualizations, such as the Lunar Disc Visualization, and the Ah Syllable Visualization.

Upon mastering the state of "Singlemindedness", then all you have to do is to let go of your focus point, and you shall enter into the realm of the "quiescent mind". No one as yet has the capability of entering the state of "quiescent mind" but the Grand Master Himself. So the key is still to put theory into practise, practise and more practise and one day maybe you can tell me how is it really like to be in the finality stage of samadhi.

May Grand Master's light of wisdom blesses us all.

well, this is what i do:

i visualise a moon disc in front of me, then it expands till infinity. Then i merge with the moon disc and become the moon disc.

Afterward i turn into GrandMaster, and visualise my heart chakra turning into the padmakumara mantra wheel. I slowly dissolve into the central [hum] in the mantra wheel, the mantra wheel dissolves into me/[hum] and me/[hum] slowly dissolves into the pure light.....

Then i proceed with breath counting.....

It works for me this way. ;D

:)

well,...

I find it is useful when I am meditating and find I don't have a quiescent mind and I am drifting through thoughts, not to feel that I have to start over to get to somewhere where my mind is quiescent.  It is this doing of starting over and getting somewhere that is the heart of non-quiescence.  The finding-myself-non-quiescent is the heart of awareness.  I am already aware when I become aware that I have not been aware!  So... if I continue where I already am (aware), I have nothing else to do.  Goal is reached, and I have done nothing to reach it.

Less is more.  Something is nothing.  Nothing is something.  etc.

IMHO, a "quiscent mind" is an immovable mind.

i have been trying to achieve that, but without much success...but i realise that all the steps before you enter samadhi is a prelude to this immovablity...

like when you chant your mantras, it has to go into your ears, adn get imprinted in your heart and mind. This somehow quietens the mind.

slowly, when you reach the step just before "entering samaddhi" , your mind is more or less quiet. then, when you do the breathing method, your mind is even more quiet..

entering samadhi quietens it further...

i haven't been successful because i dun have the will to forget "that i have some work i forgot to do...etc..." or when i am too tired after a day's work, i dun have the power of concentration. The rare queitude i achieved is when i have a good rest the previous day.

(it is only convenient for me to do my daily cultivation at 12am thereabout, so i am always very tired and had to try really hard to foget the tiredness and to concetrate)

How I achieve this state is after I merge with the particular Deity, I visualize everything around me turning into energy, the people, the temple, the city, the world, the universe, then as one with the Deity I enter into the light.
