This problem seems to be trivial, but it can be confusing. For those who can read Chinese, you know that in chinese book, there is not chapter number. But, in English, we put chapter number to keep track of translation status. The problem is if we should count preface as chapter 0 or 1. Technically speaking, it should be chapter 0. But, take book 156 as an example, it lables preface as chapter 1. Really confusing. For now, let's count preface as chapter 1 as a standard.

If translator decides to publish the book, he/she can re-arrange the numbering system

Mimosa, I am not sure sure about this elimnating confusion - assuming someone publishes something sometime, if something is chapter one in one version and chapter two in another version, that would be confusing to me!  Can't we call the preface the preface? (if there is a preface)

I agree totally with Lian Hua Dance to leave preface as it is.  Please keep in mind that translations should be done as close as to the original Chinese version as possible.  In GM's Chinese books, you find prefaces and then they are followed by prose essays without assigning any chapter numbers.  Further, if we are going to follow the books word for word, then assigning chapters should be omitted.

The headache I have is some people  count preface as preface; some count preface as chapter 1!  It is okay if one person translates the book, but it causes headhache if two people translate the same book

I agree that preface should be preface, but, invincible_east, read book 156, Daden actually labels preface as chapter 1.
We can not elminate the chapter numbering because I hardly read any English books without chapter numbering system.

Maybe, I should ask Daden about it. how come they sometimes have preface; sometimes dont :-(

Meanwhile, you two are right.  We should keep preface as preface, I just have to make it very clear to the new translators so they wont duplicate the work.

**headache**

is it okay? Please let me know before I make fool of myself again.

thanks dance and invincible_east for speaking up. It is import to express your opinion. really appreciate it!
