raychin09/10/02 at 14:19:27#1Can you elaborate on this?
the state of egolessness = wisdom and compassion.
you need wisdom and compassion to know that you aren't separate from anyone else in the universe.
without either one then it wouldn't be egolessness.
am i correct?
why is the state of "no thought" considered purity? is it because then u aren't creating any new negative karma? thanks.
Lyciss09/10/02 at 16:00:34#2Re: Egolessness and no thoughtRay,
the way i understand it is... the mind is what is naturally pure, thoughts cloud the mind so its not clear and the purity cant shine forth... thoughts keep you from realizing this pure mind so they are considered a hindrance of mind, or impure... this orignal mind (true self) when not hindered by thoughts is actually nothing more than compassion so where can the ego be found?
the best way to give you a visual is... lets say you have a clump of mud (thoughts) but under this clump of mud is a diamond (pure mind) if you dont wipe away all the mud the diamonds true beauty cant sparkle... wash off the mud with water (cultivation) and the diamond will reveal its radiant, bright and precious qualities (compassion, wisdom)

I found this quote in "The Soothing Breeze and Shining Moon Collection" (collection #5). I hope this helps:
"To allow the sentient beings to get away from suffering and obtain happiness requires the simultaneous possession of great compassion and wisdom. Only then can the merits be satisfactory and well-fulfilled. To have only great compassion, without great wisdom, one cannot teach as the opportunity arises. However, to possess only the great wisdom, without the great compassion, one runs the risk of becoming a Devil and treading on the evil path. This is not going to save sentient beings."
