All

On the latest TBN, TBF requests all translators to send in  translations in progress and self-introduction resume
to them. When I read it, I seriously flipped. Every article? wait until they proofread? how long? meanwhile can I post it on the web? Also, translators like to keep low profile, I dont know how many of you want to bother with self-introduction resume.

I decided to call her up. I was being very blut about my frustration. Fortunately, she was being very kind. I told her
that it was not practical to send her one article at a time. Even if I can do that, what is the turn around time?
Meanwhile, if TBF is holding the articles, I can neither post the article on the web nor send it to Singapore TBN, it totally
defeats the purpose of helping others. I'd rather quit.**I am quite straightforward huh?** She agreed with me and apologized for the unclear message on the TBN.  We both agree that TBF needs to proofread/edit the book before it gets published.
That is a different issue.

Then, we talk about the resume. I told her that many translators are not sure about themselves. They just started out.
I am very hesitate to scare them off with some kind of *resume*. We probably can ask them for resume when they are done with a book and ready to publish. However, not when they just start out. I told her that it is soo hard to get translators/editors/proofreaders, I dont want to scare them off. TBF seems to be bit demanding than supportive..
Of course, I apologized to her about my rude/frank remark. She told me that she'd rather me to tell her the truth to begin with so she can bring up to TBF.

I promise her to gather everyone's idea and send to her. Basically, I'd like to propose the following ideas to the TBF
Please voice your opinion.

#1 TBF should assign a master to be in charge of translations. This master needs to be truly care and concern
for non-Chinese students. In additonal, he/she understands and supports the translation effort.

#2 Under the master's guidance, a team/person should be assigned to review the translation before it is published
on the web or any other media. That will reduce the master's workload, speed up the translation progress, and improve the quality of the translation.

#3 English articles should be published on the major newspaper such as TBN.
I told her that I really dont understand why a 10-years-old global newspaper dont publish English articles.

I can only think of the above for now. I would like to gather all your ideas and concern. Please discuss the issue on the forum, or email me.

I will be gone next week, so please voice your opinion this week if you can.

Master Lian Tzi is going to attend TBF meeting on 11/02, so I need to gather all the information to her beforehand.
That includes your ideas translated to Chinese, a sample of translation, and work progress.

Please let me know

For some reason, something really hits me. very strange feelings... things will take care of itself, I worry too much.

well, anyway, dont mind my own feelings, just post yours.

I think that I know how to approach this problem now.
Thanks Jessie and Wilhall for speaking up and helping me to see the problem from different angle. Perhaps, it will happen for the best!  :-*

When we discuss a matter, we dont have to agree with each other. Everyone is entitled to his opinion. From there, we can compromise somewhere. That is the key to a good discussion.

Hi Mimosa,

Here's my view (concurring with yours):

Have TBF set up a mailbox of sorts. As long as we send all our completed translations to them, they can take their time to vet. Any mistakes will be corrected on the website and only after vetting will the final vetted product be published into book form.

As for resume, unless TBF insist, if not compulsory then it'll save everyone's effort. If they insist, then I can see no problem if the translator is genuine in his/her effort, then I'm sure he/she doesn't mind a little bit of background check. Just need to let them know that it's a procedure aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the translations. A person with a solid bodhicitta heart will understand. For a newbie, maybe we can say that once he/she submits her first article and the article is accepted, then he/she will need to submit the resume for record purposes. We can assure him/her that the resume will be kept absolutely confidential and rest assured that her personal info will not be shared with 3rd parties without her prior consent.

As for TBN publishing our translated works, that'll be fabulous!

:)
My thoughts -
I am more concerned about goals that procedures -
If we have the same goals, procedures that don't work can be modified to better reach the goals.
Access for non-Chinese speakers to GM's works is the goal (I assume).
Problems being addressed include inaccurate/poorly done translations that may steer people the wrong direction.
The help of Master or Masters is invaluable in the effort to make sure what is published really reflects what GM says/writes.  However, I feel funny telling them TBF to organize the way they approach the problem.  Any process that ends up being a bottleneck so the flow of teaching slows down is not going to help, from anyone's point of view.

I would agree that translations that haven't been through all the approval processes need to be clearly labelled as such - works in progress, not final versions, that may contain errors.  On the other hand, even "final" versions can be constantly revised.  Whether it is better to have works in progress available while being approved really depends on how fast they can be released into circulation as approved.  If the process is slow, then I think people would be better served to see initial efforts that aren't all polished yet.  If it is quick, then there is little to gain by posting things that could lead people astray.

As for the translator resume part - I am not as clear on what problem is being addressed here.  If there are some minimum qualifications they want people to have, it would be nice to state that up front.

yup...that is what I dont want to see it happen. besides, we have been sending articles to Singapore TBN. I dont wish to stop it :-( There are people waiting to read our works, I also dont want it to be postponed for too long...

Okay.  Regarding resumes, I think it is nonsense.  Perhaps they do not realize how difficult it is for us to get Translators, Proofreaders, Editors, etc.  Also we are doing this from our heart not for money.  I see it as totally un-necessary.

My largest concern is turn around time.  Therefore I would have to agree to have a Master with web access to FREQUENTLY correspond with us.  A Master appointed for this.
"This master needs to be truly care and concern
for non-Chinese students. In additonal, he/she understands and supports the translation effort."

With regard to that we can work around having some of the articles published in TBN.  A very good co-ordination process needs to be set up.

I would like to know who is all on TBF therefore we can get some better ideas.
