very powerful and useful.

Maybe you get to edit it one day :-)

Anyway, it is used when you want to assure the Deity descend to your shrine and listen to your prayer, thus it is mostly used in emergency or ceremony. You visualize that a vajra hook hooks up the Diety's seat and slowly drag it to you or your shrine. Notice, I said that seat or the cloud he/she stands on. You dont want to use hook to hook his/her body, too offensive and may upset the deity.  Once the deity arrives, you can start to pray. Of course, it is all visualization. But, if you practice it sincerely, you can fee the spiritual response.

very important point!!

Thanks for asking. A very good question

Dharma Talk by Living Buddha Lian Sheng on 29/07/96

Today, I am going to talk about Mudra, which is very important in Tantrayana Buddhism.

Mudra is one of the three materials used in teaching Tantrayana. It represents the secret and purity

of human body.

What is the secret of Mudra? It's a mark, a sign and an important symbol of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

The formation of Mudra symbolizes the presence of a certain Buddha/Bodhisattva.

We can use our five fingers to represent the elements of earth, water, fire, wind and emptiness. And our ten fingers to symbolize the Ten Dharma realms and ten Paramitas.

In short, our fingers can be used to signify many things.

As the elements of earth, water, fire, wind and emptiness form the universe, we can use our ten fingers and the ten Dharma realms to represent the cosmos. And the ten paramitas to represent the ways to reach the other shore.(To be enlightened as a Buddha) This is a simple way to understand the meaning of Mudra.

Mudra can be used to stand for Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. It contains the secret of a Buddha and it has many profound implications.

When a Mudra is formed, it contains certain Dharma power and has many hidden meanings. If our spiritual level is high enough to command Dharma power, the Mudra we form will be extremely subtle, and can be full of profound mystery.

Let me show you a few Mudras:

Normally we place flower, incense, candle, water and fruit in front of our shrine and form a Mudra to show our intention to make offering.

Each and every one of the eight personal deities enshrined by True Buddha School has his own specific Mudra. When we form one of them and pray, it signifies that we are unifying the powers of sign, Mudra and will in our spiritual cultivation.

Mudra is not only one of the three teaching materials used by Tantrayana Buddhism, it is also used to invoke all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. For instance we can form a Vajra-hook Mudra to invoke any deity that is in the surrounding.

As a tradition, we use Buddha Mudra to invoke Buddhas. Lotus Mudra to invoke Bodhisattvas. And Vajra Mudra to invoke Dharma protectors. Moreover, if we want to see how they radiate great rays of lights, we should form the Great Brilliance Mudra in their presence.

To protect ourselves, we may define a boundary that all the evils cannot cross. After we display the Vajra protection Mudra, all our surroundings will be protected by Vajra net, Vajra wall, Vajra fire .....There are all kinds protective and personal deity Mudras for us to learn.

The Mudras that True Buddha school taught are different from that taught by other Dharma masters. I have learned all the Mudras directly from the cosmos-consciousness of the great void - Buddhas and Bodhisattvas descended and taught me personally.

They would separate my cupped palms into many beautiful Mudras. This was how I learned from them. After learning and practising them, I went to consult other Buddhist bodies to confirm their uses. Only then I started to teach my disciples. Therefore, their lineage is the same as mine - directly from the cosmos-consciousness.

Even the way we True Buddha School handles the implement of Vajra and bell was taught by the cosmos-consciousness. Hence they should be considered extraordinary.

After mastery of all the Mudras, a cultivator will be able to comprehend the secret of "heart of hearts" Mudra.

For instance, to invoke Cundi , the mother of all Buddhas, all we have to do is form her Mudra; and pray sincerely :"Hi, Cundi Bodhisattva, I want to invoke you now!" What if she does not come? The secret lies in moving our fingers! She will surely accept our invitation if we use our fingers to touch her heart. Since We are unleashing the "heart of hearts" Mudra (the secret of all Mudras) by touching her heart, she is sure to descend.

Remember all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have their own personal Mudras and secrets -"heart of hearts" Mudras. As they are very confidential, you must take refuge before I can teach you their secrets.

That's all for today.
