Lyciss04/24/02 at 01:49:03#1hey everyone,
do any of you have photos of ksitigarbha? if you do or can direct me to some because i can never seem to have enough... its actually very interesting to me how many temples practice Ksitigarbha bardo deliverence but its difficult to find statues of him for sale... and many of the ones i have seen really dont impress me except for the one at the Seattle Temple... it seems for some reason he is depicted very different than all the other bodhisattvas...

Lyciss04/25/02 at 16:26:59#4Re: where is Ksitigarbha?Hey Jessie and Arica,
um scanning i think is ok... and Arica, is that really Ksitigarbha? ive never seen him depicted like that before... usually hes holding the Khakkhara (ringed staff) in his right hand and the Wish-fulfilling Jewel in the left...
in this photo hes holding the precious flaming pearl which has vast magical powers beyond description but im not sure what the peacock feather means... thank you for the photo... 8)

arica04/25/02 at 22:11:19#5Re: where is Ksitigarbha? Is the pearl in the wrong hand ??? I am not sure about that, i am always confuse with the left and right hand.....
Not very sure what is the use of the feather either.
;D
Maybe this Tangka is that of the Kitisargarbhva , maybe not.....i am not sure now... ;D
See who has the answer to this one.
Luljeta04/25/02 at 23:04:22#6Re: where is Ksitigarbha?Hi guys,
Wow, this image is very beautiful! Thanks Arica. :-* (friendly kiss only ha ha)
Actually, every image I see of Ksitigarbha is very beautiful to me. He is one of the deities that I have a very close affinity with.
Lyciss, you're right, usually Ksitigarbha is depicted holding the staff. But deities can have myriad transformations, always remember. And I believe most of the time, Ksitigarbha holds the precious pearl in both hands...
I always love the peacock bird and I'm delighted to see this image of Ksitigarbha holding a peacock feather! Lyciss might pick on me now because I have a thing for peacocks (let's not start again what happened with coconuts LOL) Unfortunately, I don't know what it symbolizes so I can't help out in this area. But i'd love to find out if anyone else knows.

Xin_Kai05/23/02 at 22:54:18#14Re: where is Ksitigarbha?Hi, Lyciss,
I am glad to hear that you are a fan of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattava.
I would like to tell you that I was literally saved by him.
A few years back, when I wanted to seriously practice GM's Dharma, I went to a TBS local chapter and tried out the practice.
But, alas, I was afflicted by heavy karma, I had many negative thoughts , couldn't keep precepts properly and a great amount of hate and mistrust for other ppl including TBS ppl.( there is a story to my hate and mistrust, but that is another story)
I couldn't keep my mind concentrated long enough and I often sabotage my own thoughts. In fact I could say that at times, I am on the verge of insanity.
At that time, I was also having financial troubles, have human relationships problems, very pessimistic and felt that I have done nothing proper with my life and wanted to end my life.
I saw the Chinese True Buddha Newsapaper and saw an article where GM was expounding the merits of reverencing
Ksitigarbha Bodhisattava. He said that anyone who is able to sincerely pray to Ksitigarbha Bodhisattava , chant the Bodhisattava's name, draw, or create images of the Bodhisattava would gain great merits and would gain happiness and after death , be reborn into the heavens for 100 times.
Up till that time, the only person I trust is GM.I thought to myself that since I have come to this state, why not just do what GM said?
I made a vow to the Buddhas and Bodhisattavas in the chapter(Lei zang si Singapore) that I would donate a statue of the Bodhisattava each month for the remaining of my life , till the very day I die.
I began to put aside an amount of money each month to buy the statue, exactly like the image posted by budhafly.I paid abt S$46 for it and i would bring it to the temple(Lei zang si Singapore) and ask that it be given out freely to anyone who wishes to have it.
I have been doing this for a few years and I could tell you the results are amazing!!
My luck changed alot. I realised my dream, that of being able to study in University.Initially, my family has no money for me, then, by a stoke of good luck, my father decided to sell the house(our only asset) in the property market boom and made a profit. We upgraded to a better house and there was some extra money and I could come to Australia to study.
In fact, after the financial gloom has lifted , things becomes easier. However, the karma on my part is not that easy to solve. I still have those problems, but, I am able to keep to practice by and large and I am beginning to see improvements.
I had wanted to continue my vow here in Australia, but unable to do so as there are no such statues on sale
here. I consulted other dharma brothers and sisters and they say it is ok , that the Bodhisattava understands the situation and that I could continue the vow after I return home.
I would definitely continue the vow. If you want the statues, like the pic shown by Budhafly, please give me your mailing address , so that I could mail one to you?
I would also like to testify here that what GM says is true.By sincerely praying to , chant his name ,draw, sculture or create the image of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattava, one could be free from sufferings.

I made a similar vow before...not Buddha statue..I will tell you guys later. I have been working for the whole day ..very tired...the result is amazing.
You see!! people say that if I hit the lottery, I will donate whatever money. That is sooooooo...^*@$#$... excuse my French. You just show everyone that it is the sincere heart that counts!! You were a poor student, but you were determined to fullfill the vow!! You are my hero!!!!!

Xin_Kai05/24/02 at 01:31:42#16Re: where is Ksitigarbha?Hi, Mimosa,
I was surprised that you anwsered this.:))
There is really nothing special abt this. I didn't made the story up.I don't really feel special or anything. In fact, I have seen many other TBS students who has beaten tremendous odds, compared to them, mine is just a small achievement.
However, it is still too early to say that I have turned my fate completely around.
But, if you want, you could use my "story".:))Hey,you don't have to be so dramatic.Tears are uncalled for:))
Better still, why don't you join me and make a similar vow for yourself? It is easier for working persons to do it.( coz they have money)
I know how hard it is to get Buddha statues in Western countries.
What I could do is to mail it to you all if you all want it.:))
Another note: the temple that accepted my statues(Lei zang si Singapore) actually collected them together into a batch and gave it to a TBS Master from Australia.I am very glad to hear that he is very delighted abt it.:)) I think I have developed a karmic affinity with TBS chapters in Australia.:))
Please give me your mailing address if you want it, I would then mail it to you once I got back home. The earliest , probably by late July.:))
I once made a bold vow : I hoped that the statues of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattavas could be as popular as Avalokitesvara Bodhisattava and Amithaba Buddhas.I hoped that every Buddhist household would have a statue of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattava and may they gain the benefits from it.
This is really too bold, as there are many millions of Buddhist out there.
But, I would continue my vow.
There were some bad publicity abt Ksitigarbha Bodhisattava statues: I heard that some ppl thought that since Ksitigarbha Bodhisattava is in charge of Hells, so reverencing it would bring ghosts to the household. This is simply nonsense!!
If you believed GM, I hoped that you could made a similar vow and may the blessings of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattava shower on you all.:))

Xin_Kai05/24/02 at 07:37:09#18Re: where is Ksitigarbha?Hi, Lyciss
Thanks for the encouragement!
BTW, I must clarify something: I noticed that Buddhafly posted 2 photos of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattava.
I have to made it clear here that the Bodhisattava that I have donated out is the second one, which is the more colourful one and the size is only abt a few inches tall.
At the current moment my financial situation only allows me to donate the smaller one.
If one day my financial situation improves, then I can donate the golden one.:))
I hope there isn't any dissapointments.
So, if you want it , just give me your mailing address,or any convenient mailing address for you and I would mail it to you.
Or the other way is to let me collect them into a batch and then I send it to you all in one go.
The earliest date i could send is probably by late July, coz by then I have graduated and returned home.

well well well
You may recall that after Buddhafly (as her friends know her!) posted that picture, I was moved to exclaim (in a foreign tongue) that it pleased me. Ksitigarbha that spoke to me. I think whatever plan you come up with, I want to be part of it. Does it hurt your vow if we voluntarily contribute to your cause? (Like donating to the people who are distributing the Power of Mantra for free). Otherwise, you may end up taking an involuntary vow of poverty.

I checked
http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi46 singapore dollars will be 26 usa dollars. Does it cause 26 dollars to buy a buddha statue?
I have two or three Buddha statues that I got free from others. I dont think that I can make any committments, but short term donation is fine. Perhaps, we can give away some statues for GM's birthday...:-) First 10 ask get them :-)

His Holiness Living Buddha Lian-sheng's series of dissertations on the "Ksitigarbha Sutra" had concluded by June 1996. This was followed by an enthusiastic rush to sponsor the sculpturing of the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's images. Thousand images were completed by end of December, awaiting to be distributed for popular worship.
Are these dissertations collected together somewhere?

Sorry for replying late. There is a 7 hours time difference between you(USA) and me (Australia), so while you are abt 4pm in the afternoon,(referring to the web site's time), its only 9am in the morning here. While you were wide awake earlier on, I was sleeping!
Mimosa , thanks again for all the compliments.
As I started this vow, i know that this is a life long commitment and I tell myself that I should not let myself be swayed by moments of emotions and then let the fire die down.
Its still a long way to go until the day I die, so I would continue doing it.:))
If I sound "cool" abt it, it is becos of this , not that i am egoistic abt it.Pls don't misunderstand me.:))
Dance, thanks for yr interest in this, why not you let me mail you the first one first then you decide whether you want to donate to this cause? So as to prove that it is authentic and I won't run away with yr money.:))
In fact , if you find any other source where you could get such statues, you buy from them and donate it out.It would be easier this way.I am sure you could find one ,(maybe rare) in USA.The merits is yours.:))
In fact , after I started doing this for a few years , I was wondering if I could set up a web site to expound the merits of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattava reverencing and also to act as a online site for those who wished to have the statues and also an online site for those who wished to donate to it.Maybe also act as a online collecton of all Ksitigarbha Bodhisattava literature , image files , pics,( I think this is the specialty of Lyciss.:)) ).
Still it is just a dream.Maybe I would come out with a plan to do it later on.Any suggestions on this?
Anyway, Mimosa, I think yr coversion is abt right, its abt US$26 for one statue. But , again , I must say that it is a small statue, only a few inches tall. It could come with a glass casing with stand( more expesive) or it could stand alone.
However, I must say that the workmanship of the statue is good. I heard from the store keepers that these statues come from Taiwan.
So, if you could get to know them(the company that produces this), maybe you could buy in bulk from them.:))
As I am buying it off the stores , I really can't get much of a discount.

Don't let the enthusiasm (sponsoring and scultpting of the images) die down! Why not just continue it?
There are after all 6 billion ppl on this planet and many are suffering.I think there are more and more ppl born into this world each day.I think Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva could eradicate sufferings and bring happiness to all who sincerely reverence, chant to, make offerings to,create, sculpture , draw or donate his images.

#just my personal thought on this subject. If we have a common interest, we definitely can setup a page on this website. Anyone who wishes to gain the statue can fill out the form. Any willing donator in the team can donate the statue. Of course, if no donator at that time, the person has to wait.. all by will.
but, we have to think of a few questions, what if people abuse it? of course, once we donate, we dont think too much. However, we also want to avoid the fact that people may get a free one and use to sell it.
I wont setup a page now...time isnt rippen. But, keep this thought.....
also, keep your eye open for a better bargain of the statue.
to buy one from USA is too expensive.

Yes , i know there is a possibility that ppl would abuse it. The temple that i gave the statues to once ask me if they could use a few of the donated statues to canvass for donations.I said simply that once You received it , you could do whatever you want with it.My job is done.Luckily they are doing it to canvass donations for activities of the temple.
If someone got the free statue and make money out of it,
it is their karma( not that i am being cold). As long as my intention is to donate it and I have done the act, I have completed the task.Case closed. :))

Buddhafly05/25/02 at 10:16:19#29Re: where is Ksitigarbha?Hello all.
We are using the Ksitigarbha Hall as our Main temple while the rest will be built later as funds are still being raised. A few days ago I brought a friend there as I was instructed last sunday to show him around the temple by Master Lian Zhi after she met him.
I had been unconciously avoiding going to the new ancestor room since we moved to our new temple. I think I understand perhaps part of the reason now. As we walked into the room and I lite an incence I immediately found this incredible (no words to describe it) energy envelope me. I have not expereinced anything like it before and I immediatly started crying as it felt so intense.
Perhas it been because of the bardo deliverances I had been doing this year..I am unsure.
Has anyone experienced this before?
Thank you
Brenda

Lyciss05/26/02 at 03:32:51#30Re: where is Ksitigarbha?Brenda,
i noticed this while we talked at different times... you mentioned the above to me a few times... i myself didnt understand your hesitence upon going to visit your ancestors... to me i thought it was karma... and your experience is what i felt would be your result experience... i find it refreshing... to me there is a moment for everything and when you went it was a right moment and they greeted you with a right feeling...
you can think it over... what if you went but didnt really care to? that would be in your heart... and it would reflect upon them... but i bet when you went you were finially open and comfortable... thats why you cried because you felt the release of a just-right moment... they rejoiced along with you and thats what also made it so emotional...
how do i know this? because i have felt similar feelings when visiting the ancestor room... although actions dont have to resemble feelings... the intention is what stirs heaven... so i cant imagine any better of an experience than what you felt...
its perfect how you went about it acording to me anyways...

Buddhafly05/26/02 at 05:39:11#31Re: where is Ksitigarbha?Lyciss you have a keen observation.
Many times I have wanted to go but didn't, something just seemed to hold me back.
When I was about to go in, there was a feeling of apprehension, which was never there before at the old
temple.
After crying for awhile I walked over to my family plaque and touched it as I felt so emotionally touched and said a silent prayer to my father.
If he heard it or not I do not know, but now this room will always be held with a powerfully high respect for me.
At the old temple's ancestor room I had never had these feelings before, now this experience has had a profound effect and has changed me.

I called Seattle Temple and spoke to the Rev. They know who you are. The statues have been giving away for the past 2 weeks, so they dont know if any is left. However, Rev will try to locate one for me. Next week if you go to Temple, if she finds one extra, she will give it to you. Otherwise..next time....
The original statue cost $300 dollars but people give away free. So, they dont want people just take because it is free. You are not just anybody, you are a TBS student. So, that is okay. However, I do expect that you will treat Maric with respect and care right.
You dont need to do any practice unless you want to. I will find some info for you. This is a very special Dharma Protector. I love Japanese culture, and this Dharma Protector have strong affinity with it. Your wife is a Japanese..so..you should have some kind of affinity with it.
I hope that you will get it!
