Akira.
A warm welcome to you.   :)
akira212104/27/02 at 23:08:09#3Re: Who is Varja Protector Raga??
I thank you all for the warm welcomes, replies, and look forward to more posts. I doubled checked my spelling because sometimes I screw up with the "G" and "J", but I spelled correctly. The miminal info that I have is Varja Protector Raga is the wraithful form of Vajrasattva and is a great protector. I know he exists and I meant him because though I do not have a direct picture to put online. I have a statue of him on my shrine, recieved empowerment from the Guru, and have been visited by him!! Please any info or positive insight would be great?? Om Mani Padme Hum!!!

I believe you are taliking about vajrapani? He is the wrathful form of vajrasattva and represents the entire vajra division of tibetan Vajrayana.
vajrasiddhi05/10/02 at 17:22:00#5, who was also tSRe: Who is Varja Protector Raga??
Ragaraja is not Vajrapani(though Vajrapani is viewed by some as another aspect of Vajrasattva, but is actually more the custodian protector of Vajrayana in general, and is one of the eight Bodhisattva attendants of Shakyamuni Buddha, which includes Majusri, Amitabha, Samantabhadra, etc...Or a wrathful form of that Bodhisattva)

The Ragaraja deity that disciples recieved empowerment for by Gradmaster in Honk Kong(1998 or 1999?) is an emanation of Vajrasattva and is an important deity of the Japanese Shingon Sect, as is Uchusma, and Acala-the main protector of the True Buddha Lineage, who was also the main protector of the Shingon Lineage, which was founded by Kobo Daishi(Kukai) whom some believe was a previous incarnation of our radiant Guru.

As you know, he is depicted with six arms, two holding a vajra and bell, and the other four holding what looks like a large white lotus bud, a bow, a noose, and a vajra hook or arrow...but I've seen variations.

'Raga', in Sanskrit, I believe means 'Lion.'  He is usually depicted with a Lion's Head above his own, though sometimes it looks like a pig's head. Ragaraja is also reffered in Shingon as the one with the'Adamantine Howl.'

The red color on his body and his white scarf and garments, you may notice, are the opposite of Vajarasattvas, whom he is the wrathful form, or 'reflex' of,who has a white body and a red scarf and garments.

Ragaraja is powerful for harminizing and magnetyzing, in an outer sense. In an inner sense, he is wonderful for purifying desire.

Some of this information is recalled from little snippets here and there that I've read. There is a good book of the iconography of deities, etc, called 'the Bodhisattva Warriors'
I can't remember who it was published by, but most of this information I got from that book. I will let you know the name of the Publisher , etc, when I find out.
I hope that was some help.
Take care,
Victor
Luljeta05/10/02 at 18:21:04#6Re: Who is Varja Protector Raga??
The only thing I didn't see anybody post yet is Ragaraja's name in Sanksrit sound, which is Vajra-raja-priya.  I think "Ragaraja" is in Tibetan sound, but I'm not sure.

Let's just stick with Ragaraja, it's much easier on the tongue lol...

BTW, I just remembered.  Once at my local temple, we had a Fire Offering for Ragaraja on Valentine's Day.  Master Hui-chun taught us that a way of making a special offering to Ragaraja is if we draw or paint the image of Ragaraja and offer it.  For the fire offering, we can burn it.  The Master made tons of photo copies of a drawing of Ragaraja, and everybody colored one in to make the special offering.  It was really cute!

Ragaraja is a great deity to pray to for magnetization, as well as protection of course.

Om mani padme hum

I'm not sure if Ragaraja is Sanskrit, Pali, or Tibetan. It doesn't look or sound Tibetan, but it could be the Tibetan pronunciation of the Sanskrit name.

Good point about creating an image of Ragaraja, etc. I feel there are immeasurable blessings in practicing that way. If you come across anymore information of Ragaraja, please post it, as there is little knowledge about this powerful deity.
I'm wondering if Grandmaster's teaching and empowerment of Ragaraja, in Hong Kong, was ever translated into English!!!???

It would be wonderful to read that translation if it exists! Perhaps, one of you kind Chinese Dharma brothers and sisters will translate that for us starving English readers one day.

Thanks for the feedback, Lu!
Take care,
Victor

:)
IF in fact the sanskrt name is vajra-raja-priya,
my home-grown sanskrt tells me:

vajra we know already, I hope;
raja = king
priya = favorite, dear, etc.

so vajra-raja-priya could be
the one most dear to the vajra king
(the vajra king's favorite)

Hello,

Victor, I'm sorry I thought you asked about Ragaraja!  I need to read more carefully sometimes.  Thank you for all the info! I just added a little extra stuff in :-)

Mimosa, it would be great if you could do a translation of the HK Ragaraja Empowerment!  I still haven't seen one out there.

Dance as always is very humorous, and even has a special disclaimer this time lol...your guesses are very interesting!

Buddhafly07/17/02 at 14:30:05#18Re: Who is Varja Protector Raga??

Hello all.
On Sunday we had the Ragaraja Practice/ Offerings-to-All-Vajra-Protectors water Homa, and I took the empowerment.

At the beginning on the practice I was sitting next to the isle
and I could feel/sense very very large beings walking in towards the front of the Shrine.  It was quite skin tingling.

Master Lian-Zhi said itis especially good if we can draw pictures of Ragaraja.

Yesterday I was at temple doing a practice and when I started Armor Protection, Ragaraja showed up instead of my regular Vajra Protector!  I do not understand the reason as I was doing my best to visualize my regular Vajra Protector.

Perhaps someone can help to give me an answer as to why.

Thanks.

Brenda

raychin12/30/02 at 12:33:25#24Re: Who is Varja Protector Raga??
Hey.

For those who are interested.  The book that vajrasiddhi was talking about is The Bodhisattva Warriors by Shifu Nagaboshi Tomio.  I think that is the book.
yamantaka12/30/02 at 18:05:05#25Re: Who is Varja Protector Raga??
Haha this was an interesting topic.... I never heard of the diety until today but now i can continue saying "you learn somthing new everyday" especially when you read GM's books. I know a little sanskrit and this short name "ragaraja" is quite simple it means "lion king" raga=lion raja=king. May buddha bless:)
vajrasiddhi12/30/02 at 18:14:31#26Re: Who is Varja Protector Raga??
That`s confirmed! Thanks raychin!

I almost forgot about it, but when I had searched for it earlier I couldn`t find it because I thought the publisher was Shambhala.

The publisher is Samuel Weiser Inc. The book can be found on Amazon.

Please note that the book deals mainly with protector deities related to Japanese esoteric sects. The author especially bridges the gap between different Japanese martial arts groups, esoteric Buddhism, and their respective protector deities. I had originally stumbled upon the book while doing research on Ragaraja, Marici, Uchusma, and Acala a few years ago after attending some empowerment ceremonies by Grandmaster. The book is great for some obscure information related to most of those deities (from what I recall), but I didn`t read the whole book.

Thanks again raychin!

The practice of Vajra Protector Raga requires empowerment. There are impt visualisations to do too. If i am not mistaken, GM wrote about the Protector in Book 49.

lotuschild01/06/03 at 10:34:05#30Re: Who is Varja Protector Raga??
Regarding the Yellow circle & the blue one
as you all have stated it is Ragaraja's Heart Mantra,
but the two colors represent
the Sun & moon respectively
as part of this particular practice.
But if one is looking for more detailed info pls remeber
Empowerment first then the transmission of this practice. ;D
wish everyone to have true happiness & good  cultivation
