BTW, any new developments on the copyrights issue?

According to GM's article, all we have to do is to send a copy of all completed translations to TBF. That should be easy to abide by.

We really should adhere to GM's instructions since he has voiced his opinion.
jessie08/07/02 at 17:55:49#2Re: Copyright
are all articles now routed to TBF?

or did i miss out on some postings which mimosa has put up?

:

anyway, i do hope that all articles go thru' TBF, not because of anything, but because it is GM's wish...

Team

I just came back from my vacation.

Anyway, TBF has already acknowledged my letter and is very aware of what we are doing. TBF told me that I dont have to send every article to them because they dont have anybody to check the article anyway. All we have to do is tell them which books  we are currently working on.

When we want to publish a book, that will be a totally different story. We will have to send all materials to them.

I also gave them our website address, all our work are accessible by the public.

For the peace of the mind, I will send another letter to TBF in couple of weeks. We have more translators joining and I should inform them which new books we are working on it

Mimosa.
I read-looked at pictures of TBS News yesterday and I noticed
that in the front and second page that Padmakumara and your name and Jessies was mentioned.
It all seems very exciting..!!
Would you please give us a brief of the articles?

Thank you.

Ah! I basically taught people how to handle the library project.  Many chapters tried and failed. Libraries are not so easy to negotiate. I gave steps and strategies. What I didnt mention was how much time I have spent and would never do the same project again :-(

I mentioned Jessie because she was in charge of the asia.
I did mention on one of the posts on padma that we sent the books to 5 continents (including europe, africa, usa, austrial, and asia)

speaking of which, I must thank Brenda
recently, I got one email and it has something to do with Brenda :-)

Brenda, remember that you asked me to send book to BION system? or something like that? I sent them 2 English books becuase they are not library.

however, they told others about us and one buddhist-and-inmate association contacted us and asked for books. This is great! We can send GM's books to jails!!!

Thanks Brenda, all the goood karma goes to you!!

The English publication issue is getting very complicated....

Basically, I dont think that PLS will publish any more English books, TBF will take care of it. But, publishing English books is not trivial, you must have someone that knows how to promote books. Also, TBF will take care of proofreading. Proofreading is not a kidding issue. The person must be well-versed in both English and Chinese, and know the terms very well.  Dont look at me, I am not a master!

TBF asked Daden Publisher, and Daden Publisher refused. Of couse, they dont have the right staff. They are in Taiwan. Then, Daden approached me, no kidding, I ran as fast as I could.

The right thing to is to hire a full-time staff for it. They can not just hire anybody. It doesnt fit!

mimosa08/29/02 at 13:09:42#8Re: Copyright
dont discuss the above issue with anyone yet..it is my personal observation...but..I do have some solid evidences....... just keep among team members

also...very soon, I will help PLS to do their book inventory sale. They want to get rid of all their books.....I encourage you all to contact your local chapters to get the books. so cheap...besides, it may be the last chance to get books published by PLS..

PLS means QUALITY!!!

He asked me to help him..but he needs to draft it first and now, he asked me to draft it! boy...

May, yes, I will keep you informed

as far as i know the book is about $3 dollars each! not a final answer yet!! but...really...worth buying it!

Does anyone know where I can get a Household Feng-Shui book now?  I gave mine to Kevin and his parents nabbed it for themselves.

##sorry!!

PLS wants to do a big inventory sale, yes, please go ahead.
most books are the range of $3~$4 dollars. Just Rev. KC is taking his time to give me the list. However, if there is a strong interest, I will push it.

PLS may not publish any more Engish books (my own observation), please dont spread around..just my personal view

Buddhafly10/09/02 at 01:55:45#14Re: Copyright

From Jessie:
I feel very compelled to talk about copyright again...

I was proofreading a translated article about copyright (GM wrote the original). In it, GM states that all works - regardless of whether they are translated or original - as long as he is the writer who wrote about the Dharma, the rights should be accrued to him. He made this declaration because he wants to ensure that there isnt any distortion in the process of translation, and that is why he requested for TBF to vet.

I was looking at Padmakumara's copyright statement, and I can't help but feel disturbed and worried. On that webpage, it seems that we stated that copyright belongs to Padmakumara. That is wrong. Copyright should be GM's.

I really hope that the copyright issue to be looked at. GM and his works are of utmost importance, and as his disciples, we should respect him and his works by giving the due copyrights.

Don't mean to be preaching, but this is very important.
Buddhafly10/09/02 at 01:57:49#15Re: Copyright

Hello Jessie.

This is a very good point!
Thank you for bringing it to our attention.
As soon as Mimosa returns she can help to
sort this out.

I didnt create the webpage:-( Tom create that page because at that time GM didnt write the article. We can modify it accordingly now that we know GM's wish.

what do you suggest? post your suggestion, I will just copy/replace it

I changed a little bit.

I used Sheng-yen Lu, because it is GM's official name.
Daden Culture Publisher uses GM's official name also.

Thanks Jessie's for being so careful, otherwise we may be in big trouble!!

Please look it over again.

thanks for looking thru...GM is so dear to us cos' he is the source of lineage empoewrment. it is the least we can do to ensure that his works (and his work) are propagated with the best of quality!

Hm...
something happened between Jessie's version and the posted version:

Greatly appreciation to all our translators and supporters around the world who have tirelessly helped to propagate the true dharma, as pulmugated by Shakyamuni Buddha and Living Buddha Lian-sheng

"greatly appreciation" is not right!
Pulmugated???  Where is my dictionary?

I will change it back to great appreciation.

gee...yes, what is Pulmugate?

Mimosa
DragonBall10/17/02 at 19:44:57#23Re: Copyright
Just a little bit of polishing...

Third para, which reads:

Commercial Usage
No part of this website may be copied, reproduced, stored in a retrieval system, or transmitted, in any form or by any means, electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording and/or otherwise for any commercial purpose without the prior written permission to Padmakumara.org, which will in turn convey any request to True Buddha Foundation.

I think it should be "...without the prior written permission of Padmakumara.org..."

Fifth para:

This website may not be copied, framed, imported, lent, resold, hired out or otherwise disposed of by way of trade in any form, binding or cover other than that in which it is published, without the prior written consent of Padmakumara.org. The written consent will be the result of consultation with True Buddha Foundation, as the latter is the official appointed gatekeeper of Sheng-yen Lu's works.

The last sentence should be "...as the latter is the officially appointed gatekeeper...."

Sorry for the late comments.

one more thing: maybe for non-TBS student, they may not understand who GM is. So i added in the term "Root Guru" in front of GM's name..how's this? With Root Guru, they will know that this is oru Lineage Master and hence copyright is naturally that of Root Guru...

Should be final, i guess...pls comment..

Mimosa, wat do u think? can do?

i just feel that there were a couple of instances where GM's name was mentioned without the appropriate designation. With the "Root Guru" term, not only will it emphasise GM as our lineage master, it will emphasise that copyright rightfully belongs to him as the propagator of True Buddha School dharma...

what do u think?
mimosa10/21/02 at 17:36:51#32Re: Copyright
#i just feel that there were a couple of instances where GM's #name was mentioned without the appropriate designation.

I see what you are saying, and your reason are valid,
Actually, I want to use Sheng-yen, Lu throughout the paper at first, then I balanced out a little bit by adding Living Buddha  in front of some names.

I did it on purpose though, and I gave a reason why. I am also very involved in GM's Chinese book promotion. They have changed the author name from "Living Buddha Lian-sheng" to "Sheng-yen, Lu" because they want to downplay the religion part a bit. It will be easier for GM's books to be accepted by general public. As far as books are concerned, GM is considered as "Sheng-yen, Lu", so that is why I chose Sheng-yen, Lu as well. That will be consistent with chinese book promotion. I think that on the copyright legal paper, they also use sheng-yen, lu.

then again, I dont want to be soo offensive, so I add Living Buddhas on some instances.
