Hi All. I dont really get to come on here much recently,
due to the fact of a lot of temple activities that had to be taken care of.
I would like to talk about my life in TBS i took refuge in 1989
my name is rev. Lianhong, what prompted me to write this was a question put to me by a fellow disciple.
It was about the situation in TBS regarding non speaking chinese. why do I use the term non speaking chinese & not just westerners is because, I have come across alot of disciples who are also chinese that cannot read or speak chinese.
When I first attended a ceremony held by GM in England in the early 90's we was put outside & when it came to the dinner we were put near the kitchen.
At that moment my heart was in alot of pain, the thoughts running through my mind were how can it go like this we are all GM's disciples.
During GM's speech at that time his eyes was on us about 70% of the time. And I knew then that GM felt our pain.
netherless I carried on practicing diligently & in my mind i just felt that today i came to take refuge in Grandmaster Lu not anyone else. An as regards to the disciples i thought if we want it to change we have to lead by example.
As my kung fu teacher taught us only when you put GM's teaching into action will you be able to make a change.
I stayed with my teacher for at least six years, shortly after leaving him I had a dream wherein GM told me i have an affinity to be Ordained, I was scared i was saying to myself that I am only twenty one years old & i havent even lived yet.
So I wrote a letter to GM explaing the detail of the dream, grandmaster wrote back by telling me that i have a very strong affinity to become ordained but i will know in my own time when the time is right.
To cut along story short I had two more dreams during the time before I ordained, that is when i decicded its now or never. & I made the vow that I would like to be able to spread GM's teaching to all those that I have an affinity with.
esp. non speaking chinese, & that I was willing to walk the path of a rev. regardless what obstacles i faced.
(crazy lol just playin)
At that time when I arrived in seattle after I was Ordained they said I would have to learn how to sing & lead the practice & learn the nesscesary rituals a rev should know.
But what i didnt realize was how hard it was going to be at the time & I went through alot of frustrations during the three months while trying to learn the rituals & the singing. During that time there was no phonetics at all i had to make my own & try & learn it within three months.
I would constantly have an inward battle with my mind saying I cant handle it how can they expect me to learn all this wihtin three months.
I was saying dont you realize i dont understand chinese.
then i calmed my mind down & also said to myself at least after you get it its yours no-one can take it away from you & you would be able to share it with the disicples in the future.
And I said if i give up now how can i handle the future. then shortly afterwards they asked me to learn how to learn to lead the practice in chinese I had two days to learn. then I would have to lead the four o clock practice in front of GM.
when I look back what did i gain, I felt i gained an understanding that to truly benefit the non speaking chinese in the future the first generation will have to undergo alot of hardships. But we have to be diligent this is also a type of compassion. Why? because you are willing to walk the path of learning to understand GM's teaching & the TBS practice & rituals so that the new disciples or future generations would not have to undergo the same thing.
The road is not easy,(cultivation) but with perservarance one will be able to penetrate the true meanings of GM's teachings.
Once someone said to me "rev I feel so sorry for you" I said why? they replied because GM has so many wonderful books & you are not able to read them. I replied that even though you are able to read them are you truly able to penetrate the true meaning of his teachings & are you able to truly cultivate your heart which is the essence of GM's teachings.
What I am trying to say to all the non speaking chinese dont give up hope, one has to remeber that TBS is still new & ones heart has to be strong concentrate on your main practice.
if there are those of you who are able to have access to teaching or masters that speak a variable amount of english & knows how to put the meaning across.
take notes & ask questions that may benefit all.
But most of all dont give up Hope in GM because there are only a few teachings out there when i took refuge there was only one book available, the essence is right there in the actual practice * remeber what ever you gain from actual practice is yours & if you feel it would be beneficial to all then you can share it with those whom have an affinity with you & TBS.
Also note* not because there are so many of GM's teachings available to the Chinese is it always treasured. when you work hard for it or it is not that easily accessable then when you get it will you truly treasure it.
Ahmitofo (i sincerly pray that GM will bless us all to be able to dissemante His teachings smoothly & completly & cultivate diligently & honor the Guru & treasure the dharma & to have an unwavering faith).
Shi Lianhong :)

*paying great homage*
I met Rev. Lian Hong many years ago. When the group of English students came to Seattle, I was the oral interprator.
I have seen the pain you had been through. I have seen how other Chinese treat you. It is disguesting. However, not every Chinese is like that, GM is a very compassionate master! I think that I have been quite decent as well :-) There are others right?
I fully agree with you about not reading all the Chinese books. I have seen way too many people whose Chinese are so good, but then so what??? Do they apply to their real life? No, not at all. There was one guy who used to be a prolific writer on TBN, he wrote complicated Buddhism. I noticed his name, but never read his work. too hard for me. Then, one day I learned, he left TBS and is now slandering GM.
So, what does his excellence Chinese do for him? only to blind himself!!
On last TBN, GM also wrote an article about theory and practice. So what if you know all the theory, but if you dont apply to it, what good does it do?
I have a lot of respect for you. Rev. You are also a language genius. Many people can not tell that you are a non-Chinese form the phone. Your Chinese pronounciation is better than a lot of Chinese.
Knowing Chinese is not the way to attain buddhism.
The way to attain buddhahood is "Respect your teachers, Treasure Dharma and Actualize Practice". We again have learned that from your experiences.
Would I have your permission to post your article on the next padma news? Would I also have your permission to translate the article to Chinese. I would like to post it on TBSN, Daden (GM's chinese publisher) website, and TBN newspaper.
Please let me know
Again, thanks for sharing your experience with us.
ps: I would like to post it on the daden website because GM just wrote an article on the theory and practice. Your post is a perfect testimony!

WAYS OF TEACHING BUDDHADHARMA
Dharma Talk by Living Buddha Lian Sheng on 20/7/90
(page 70-74 Achievement of Rainbow Light Body volume one)
Translated by Yuan Zheng Tang
Of the ways of teaching Buddhadharma, two of them, "oral transmission" and "void transmission" are considered very authentic.
"Oral transmission" i.e. by means of mouth has been around for a long time. Buddhadharma has been passed from generation to generation by this means. Zen school has transmitted its lineage on a person to person basis from the first patriarch to the six patriarch Hui Neng. In fact, most of Sakyamuni Buddha's disciples became enlightened after listening personally to his Dharma talk and carried out spiritual cultivation.
"Oral transmission" has the advantage that all the minute details can be explained and clarified. But not all "oral transmission" will be time consuming. When the fifth patriarch Hong Ren passed the gist of Zen Buddhadharma to the six patriarch, he only needed a few words. Hui Neng then carried out the actual practice and was tested by his teacher on a later date.
After hearing and understanding the teaching, a person must carry out an important task i.e. to verify the teaching personally. This is how the Buddhadharma is transmitted orally.
"Void transmission" is very different from "oral transmission". A receiver will suddenly come to realize the Buddhadharma when the great void transmitted the teaching to him. Many great spiritual achievers had such experiences. Patriarch Tilopa was taught by the great void when he was in deep meditation. Nagarjuan Bodhisattva was reputed to have the same kind of experience. When he opened the "Southern Heaven Iron Tower" , he met Vajrasattva who transmitted the teaching to him.
Generally speaking, Tantrayana considers Maha Vairocana to be the first generation patriarch, Vajrasattva, the second. "Long Shu"(Nagarjuan), the third, and Sakyamuni Buddha , the fourth.
How did Nagarjuan get his lineage from Vajrasattva ? As Vajrasattva was a Bodhisattva and not a human being, Nagarjuan can only receive his teaching by means of "void transmission" in his meditative stabilization.
In my case, apart from receiving oral transmissions from many of my religious teachers and later on verifying them personally, I have experienced "void transmission" from such sages as "Gu Lian " and "Three Mountains Nine Marquees in my meditative stabilization.
I have not received any instructions from other human beings on the subject of Mudras . All the Mudras that I knew were taught by the great void. Once I closed my palms, Mudras will be formed and I was told by a voice the name of the Mudra I had just formed. The Mudras are true , but my teachers are invisible. Therefore I should say that the lineage of our school is a combination of "Oral transmission " and "void transmission".
I am not alone in this aspect, many past patriarchs had the same experience. They learned from their predecessor when they were in meditative stabilization.
Patriarch Naropa was reputed to have been taught the six yoga of Naropa by the void in his meditative stabilization . And later on the Buddhadharma were passed from generation to generation using "oral transmission."
In order to carry out spiritual cultivation, it is best for us to take refuge and receive empowerment from a guru. Merely reading from a book is inadequate. I must say that it is difficult for non-accomplished cultivators to meet the patriarchs from the void. But I am quite sure some of you are able to tell when they arrive at our group practice.
In fact, many came today. If your mind is close to them, in your meditative stabilization, they can teach you the Buddhadharma that you want to learn.
I will be considered a great liar if I have felt nothing , seen nothing, heard nothing and sensed nothing right now. If I have just followed the rituals, and faked the sensational experience, then am I not a liar?
In the presence of all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, I am affirming that "void transmission" is real. When you have attained a higher level of spiritual enlightenment in future, you will bear me out.
Just now after I had finished the meditation, I opened my eyes and started to chant the heart mantras of the Buddhas. Although my eyes were open, I was still in a stage of meditative stabilization. I saw something in the void, I will never deny what I saw even if you threaten to kill me for saying so.
Now that I have nothing to ask from life, it will be unkind of you to say that I am a hoax ! As I do not ask for anything in return. If I have cheated you, I have to take cover elsewhere later on , and life will be meaningless to me. I might as well go and enjoy my life in the Samsara world now. So please remember, Buddhadharma can be transmitted by the void when you are in a stage of meditative stabilization.
In conclusion, both "oral transmission" and "void transmission" are important. If you have had the sensational experiences I just mentioned, you are telling the truth. Otherwise, don't claim to have such experience, as you are lying . Only you yourself know whether you have arrived at this level.
A truly accomplished cultivator will be able to attest to what I have just said.

written by Living Buddha Liang Sheng
The Wave Samurai
Lian Hua Jing Xiang and her fellow disciples from Osaka's Lei Zhang temple sang a lovely song for me.
The song was entitled "the Wave Samurai". The lyrics are as follows:
"Seeing my past-life teacher this life, I am able to read my teacher's mind although we had parted long time ago.
Sincerely I made a vow to follow my teacher's footstep to liberate all sentient beings,
The lotus flowers from True Buddha School are blooming everywhere now.
Even facing the stormy sea, standing on sheer precipice and overhanging rocks, and walking on thorny undergrowth,
The courage and brightness given by Living Buddha Lian Sheng will always remain in my heart
The compassionate Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is very magnificent. She can have spiritual responses with anyone, anywhere and anytime.
When Grandmaster opened the key in my heart, I was able to recall my past cultivation and how I walked the Bodhi path.
I am will to risk my body, and my life just to march forward the Mantra of 'Om Guru Lian Sheng Siddhi Hom' forever permeate in Japan."
This song reminded me of:
"Wave"
I am just like a wave. In fact life is like a wave, going through the process of forming and breaking, similar to transmigations.
"Samurai"
I have a samurai spirit in my salvation work. Moving ahead, and fearing nothing, I do what I have to do without much words.
My Japanese friend told me: "Samurai spirit is nothing but action."
"What action?"
"There is no answer to that, it is just action. Action is the real intrinsic value of Samurai spirit, it is the most authentic."
His answer led me into deep thinking. I thought of the Chinese Zen Buddhism. Zen discarded the action element and concentrated on the verbal element.
Verbal Zen is nothing but telling tales and fiddling with words. In fact, there was no action at all. Hence Zen Buddhism has fallen into its own traps.
Words spoken by tongues are superficial.
The real Zen spirit should be action orientated.
When the fifth patriarch of Zen Hong Ren taught the oral tradition of Vajra Sutra to six patriarch Hui Neng
he only mentioned:
"No ego."
"No people."
"No sentient Beings."
"No longevity."
After explaining these terms, the dharma was considered passed to the next generation. But the fifth patriarch Hong Ren stressed to Hui Neng that he must "Put the dharma into action!"
After learning the dharma, Hui Neng hid himself among the hunters for nine years, he put the Zen Buddhism into practice. Thereafter he returned to Nan Hai's Fa Xing temple, taught the Dong Shan dharma, and finally returned to Bao Ling temple, before he died at Cao Xi's Nan Hua Temple.
The six patriarch of Zen Buddhism were Bodhidharma , Hui Ke, Zeng Can, Dao Xin, Hong Ren and Hui Neng. The essence of the "six patriarch sutra" is basically action, and not words and debates.
I noted most people learn Buddhism superficially. They attended forums and engaged in debates.
Very few people really cultivate diligently. It is very sad to note that the time spent on argument is more than that on actual cultivation.
Dharma is not for argument; it is to be put into practice.
As a samurai, I cultivate Tantra everyday.
I perform the ritual, as well as use the tantra.
I believer salvation work must be earnest and down-to-earth.
I must immerse myself in the nature and give sermon happily.
I indulge in deep thought and long meditation.
I work happily.
I write, and I paint.
I tour the whole world.
Slowly I tasted the true meaning of Japanese Samurai spirit. It is a special feeling that is so different from other patriotism. The intrinsic quality of Samurai is more like a rhino.
The wave reminded me of transmigation.
Since time immemorial, human beings have been transmigating in the six realms of existence just like a moving wheel.
It's said in the Xing Di Guan Sutra:
" Human beings transmigrate in the six realms of existence, just like a moving wheel without beginning and end."
(The six realms of existence are Heaven, Human, Asura, Hell, Hungry ghost and Animal.)
I was asked:
"Why do you call yourself "Flower Light self-mastery" Buddha ?"
My reply.
"Because I am enlightened."
"What have you enlightened?"
"I see everything clearly as it is." I added : "the title is no difference from those of the past Buddhas. All of us have gained enlightenment. The truth is nothing will increase nor decrease, in fact there is no difference in anything. My dharma body is permeating in the universe, I can appear anywhere, in any form as I like. Therefore my dharma body is the same as that of the Buddha. Moreover, the dharma I have is the same as that taught by other Buddhas."
Therefore I know I have my transmigrations in many countries
China, Tibet, India, Taiwan, Japan.....
When I was reborn in India, so was Lian Hua Jing Xiang.
When I was reborn in Japan, so was Lian Hua Jing Xiang.
When I am reborn in Taiwan, so is Lian Hua Jing Xiang.
She has been my disciple all the while.
The lyrics she wrote was:
"Seeing my past-life teacher this life, I am able to read my teacher's mind although we had parted long time ago.
I am able to recall my past cultivation and how I walked the Bodhi path, once grand master opens the key in my mind."
It is joyous to be able to verify what we did in the past and present lives. It is a perfect situation regardless of time. After seeking out what we felt, only propitious omen remains. The encounter is not a strange thought, nor is it a connivance, it is really a case of transmigration that was performing in real life situation.
I was thinking of the waves.............................
Life is very short, soon it will come to an end. Life is just like waves being pushed by the current, appearing and disappearing.....
In the whole process, only "present" is the most fascinating.
I have found the truth of life at the present moment.
I am able to distance myself from all kinds of troubles.
I do not have pain, nor fear. I don't bother about success or failure. I am no longer loss.
Through the article "waves", I believe you can comprehend the true meaning of living, if you pay special attention to my words ----
"I am a valuable person. But the biggest value is valueless.
I owe the whole universe, I am the universe.
But I am all alone in this world, even my body does not belong to me.
I possess the mystic powers. The powers derived from cosmos which is without boundary.
Life is without a beginning, nor has it an end.
This life is only a short journey.
The meaning of life lies in recognizing what life is.
There are mountains higher than this mountain.
Likewise, there are mountains lower than this mountain.
I take a breather, inhale a gulp of fresh air, and enjoy seeing the scenery this life.
Once I am enlightened, I will tell everybody the truth I have realized.
I did all what the past saints did.
To me, everything is emptiness.
I do not bother about anything.
The truth is : "Good and bad, success and failure, beautiful and ugly, kind and evil, vegetarian meal and non-vegetarian meal, Buddha and Mara, Heaven and Earth, Love and hatred, big and small....." all these contrasts do not exist.
There is no contrast; only absolute.
When you are too practical, you must be more imaginative.
When you are too imaginative, you must be more practical.
The highest level of wisdom is no wisdom."
When everybody was singing "Tomorrow will be a better day."
I was thinking "Tomorrow is just another day."
Enlightenment is no easy task. It is painstakingly marching towards the destination. I must admit, I did not have a sudden enlightenment; I had a progressive enlightenment. In fact, I consider sudden enlightenment to be the accumulation of progressive enlightenment.
Enlightenment is definitely not a specious argument, nor is it an equivocal attitude.
Enlightenment is not a deceptive argument.
Enlightenment is utilization.
Enlightenment is not a superficial phenomena.
Enlightenment cannot be explained in word. It is the finger pointing to the moon.
Finally I come to realization.
I want to tell the whole world what I have realized the truth. It does not matter whether they can understand me. I even wrote a song entitled "It does not matter."
In this life, I have read many books and have many encounters that other human never dreamed of. My ability to communicate with the spiritual world is excellent. I am able to have a full enlightenment because of my many strange encounters.
I am very sure those who follow me, will have eternal bliss and unrivaled wisdom. Their minds will be enriched.
To me:
Equality is everywhere,
It does not matter as I fear nothing,
Not a sign of hindrance,
No birth and death,
Purity and eternity.
Because of the great cause, I am born in this world.
Going through the stages of cultivation, realization, propagation, finally I am entering into nirvana.
My life is just like a wave that cultivate, enlighten, propagate, and passing into nirvana.
It is a common sight.
A certain night in Japan. A group of people gather at a pub to chat.
These pubs can be found in any city. Their business hours are from evening to two, or three a.m.
I noticed a pub by the name of "Heavenly Dog". It is a franchise, you can find it in every city.
"What is your past-time?" I asked a Japanese.
"Drinking." He said finally.
I believed what he said, because I heard the following in Japan..............................
Japanese employees seldom go home directly after work. As a group they will hold their jackets and go to the pub for a drink. They believe if they go home too early, their wives will look down upon them, thinking that they have no friends and do not know how to socialize (useless).
When they drink
They chat.
They are adaptable.
They laugh
They sing after being tipsy.
(In a pub at the outskirts of Tokyo, I saw it with my own eyes. Seven Japanese had a drink too many, after singing, they walked out of the pub tipsy-turvily, lined up in a row, unzipped, and started peeing. Seven columns of water from the fountain were glittering under the street light. As there were many cars passing by, horns were honked repeatedly. They were laughing heartily).
Japanese men have a habit of peeing wherever they like, how crazy they are.
Some pubs are crowded while others are elegant. Some are equipped with simple tables and chairs, while others use tatami, still others are decorated with colorful lanterns.
All kinds of sake can be found in Japan. My favorate brand is "Shen".
The appetizers were very simple.
It can be pickle, small fish, yakitori, and other fry stuff.
If you are hungry, you can order udon - Japanese noodle. When they eat, they inhale the udon and made a lot of noise, like a hungry ghost!
Maybe drinking is a Japanese tradition!
There are all kinds of Japanese traditions around. For instance, Bushido, Judo, kobaki, bijutsu, kimono, niwa just to name a few. If drinking can be considered an art in Japan, then maybe we can coin a new term called "shudo"!
Let us imagine such a scene.
Wearing kimono, a Japanese man sits on the well-designed tatami in a small room that has a paper wall.
A bottle of sake, and a few plates of appetizers are placed on the small table. The Japanese woman dresses in traditional costume, gently pours the sake for her husband. Better still if it is snowing heavily outside, and the heater is turned on. Romantically, both of them sipping the wine, smiling and chatting.
May I ask, where else can we find the tranquillity of our mind ?
(Above all, they must love each other very much).
I am always thinking
Japanese are known to have samurai spirit,
Isn't wine the wave?
I wrote a short poem entitled "Wine is wave."
"Cleansing again and again,
Please cleanse me,
Please cleanse the intestines of all sentient beings,
When I am drunk,
My legs leap forward and backward,
Like a wave,
I pass through the life stage with varied styles."

jessie11/29/02 at 16:30:11#9Re: My Life In True Buddha Schooli know of a Chinese Dharma Sister who can't speak Chinese. She can only speak in English. But she didn't do her practices because of language barrier and other personal matters.
i wish she would start practicing soon...I do hope that the English practices would be out real soon!

mimosa12/30/02 at 16:29:41#12Re: My Life In True Buddha SchoolRev. Lian Hong's article has been translated to Chinese and published on the world TBN, daden publisher website and padma website. The translator told me that when he translated the article, he felt very bad how we chinese treat other people. I am glad this article got published. really, how can we call ourselves Buddhists??
##Luke the young white kid from the seattle ling shen ching ##tze temple. I am stationed in Korea at camp garry owen 4-
I remember to see your young face in Seattle. You amazed me. I remember to see you wearing the yellow robe to attend GM's ceremony right? I wondered to myself what motivated this little boy to practice so diligently? Is his father dragging him to come?? You are amazing!
Luke, would you please be so kind and write down why you join TBS and how you maintain your faith. If you have encountered any spiritual experience and receive any buddhism wisdom, please share it as well. Again, I will have this article translated to Chinese and publish on global TBN.
I would like to bring some awareness! Your story will encourage endless people..... really...

Thank you and forgive me for not writing the story right now i have to gather my spiritual powers up again. For the last 2 days ive been quite depressed because i am in a sorta love quarral right now and i know its no excuse because of the teachings of GM. Thats why i dont consider myself very spiritually mature yet because i still have strong worldly feelings that sometimes over power me. I sometimes wish i never had the ability to fall in love and only be capable to have a universal compassion(karuna) love. I am sorry but my life is always ups and downs and soon i will be back up and ready to fight ingnorance, greed and anger again! Praise the dharma which qonquers samsara(aka the saha world). lukeking3@hotmail.com
Om guru lian shen siddhi hum!
